Koh Lanta - the other side

Aside from all the world schooling community activities we have had some tasty food. Early on we found some favourite local haunts like the local chicken noodle soup place.

Olive, Boo and me all had our haircut!

Our apartment has a lovely big pool as well. I’ve managed to take a few early evening dips by myself - managing to get some proper lengths in! But I have to make sure I am out before it gets too dark as the bats start swooping down onto the water!

We spent evenings chilling on the beach near us, watching the sun set, learning poi and generally messing about in the sea.

We’ve all had massages as you should in Thailand and mine left me suitably bruised! We’ve also seen a fair few films over the month - Moana and Wicked were particularly good fun (for the kids!).

We have also been entertained for the whole month by the road works outside our apartment. They are able to lay road down so quickly here!

We took a longboat trip one evening round the mangroves. Our guide was super - he let Olive and Selina get out the boat and climb over the mud to plant new mangroves. It was one of our highlights of our entire month in Koh lanta!

For my birthday we headed over to Old Town and spent the day wandering round enjoying the more peaceful side of the island and buying lots of stuff from the markets.

Me, Selina and Boo pushed ourselves out of the comfort zone by trying fried insects at a local festival near us! The caterpillars, crickets and grubs were quite tasty really in a nutty way! This will be the future anyway with climate change! I could easily eat a plate of crickets for dinner!!

Island life

We took the ferry over from Krabi to Koh Lanta. It was a nice smooth ride. We’ve settled into a simple apartment by Phrae Ae beach about a third of the way down the west side of the island. It meets our needs perfectly. The beaches are just the right busy and the one next to us is beautiful. The water is a super temperature. The weather is 25-32C with no rain. Lovely!

We’ve been joining in with the world schoolers doing all sorts of activities: board games, arts and crafts, yoga, scavenger hunt, cinema nights and Thai cooking class plus lots and lots of swimming and playing on the beach.

We are meeting some lovely people. There are about 50 families here so there really is every type of people and things to do including lots of spontaneous events. It’s great fun and really feels like a community. My only bug bear is the temperature - it’s a little too hot for me during the day but then lovely in the evening and night time. Hey ho - you can’t win everything!

My favourite bit of all of it here though is simply being sat on our nearest beach watching sunset! Simple things!

Crabby Krabi

We have a few days in Krabi before we head to Koh Lanta. Thailand’s great - so lovely to be back here. Super chilled and everything is just so easy. No wonder most tourists here look half my age - although to be fair there are a lot of families around as well.

We enjoyed walking next to the water in Krabi town - watching the funny mudskipper fish crawling along the mud and following a kingfisher.

Selina found a quirky place called Giant Catfish Farm. Although it wasn’t the giant catfish that caught our key - more a massive prehistoric fish that took giant gulps of food as it swam by.

Ao Nang beach was fun but waaay too busy for our liking - there were so many tourists coming and going and the stretch of bars and restaurants were a bit intimidating! Would have been super fun when I was twenty years younger! The fire display on the beach as it got dark was fun.
