Anand Prakash Yoga Ashram

We have spent 2 weeks in a small yoga ashram in Rishikesh, a town in the Himalaya mountains close to the source of the Ganges River. The Beatles came here in the 60's and wrote most of their White Album here, hippies and yoga fanatics have been coming here ever since.

We have a strict schedule to follow of yoga, chanting, meditation, blessing ceremonies and breathing exercises. A loud bell is rung at 5am every morning to get us up and there is silence in the ashram from 9pm - 8.30am everyday. We are doing 3.5 hours of yoga a day, often with monkeys skipping across the roof during classes!

All our meals are provided, we all eat together in the ashram at set times, we eat sat cross-legged on the floor. Breakfast we eat in silence! We are following a strict diet of rice, chapattis, fruit and veg. No processed food at all, no dairy, no lactose, no gluten. Meat and alcohol are completely banned in Rishikesh as it is a holy town so you cannot buy it anywhere.

Here is the lovely view from the roof:

We have been and watched a blessing ceremony called aarti where baskets of flowers are set alight and floated down the river to give thanks for the Ganges River. We went to a satsang by a famous holy guru called Sri Prem Baba, we have had private meditation classes and we have had massages to try and revive our aching muscles!

Pete has had a consultation with a Ayurvedic herbal doctor who has given him some advice for healthier living. She believes we are all made up of fire, water and air. She told Pete he has too much air. I could have told him that and saved his 300 rupees!!

We are getting much better at the yoga and can really feel a difference, but will we keep it up when we get home.....???

Where's the sun gone?

We're wearing coats everyday!?! Is this really India? It was shorts and t-shirts all the way six years ago when we travelled through South India in January 2008.

We've spent a few days in Delhi staying in the bustling Pahar Ganj area where every building seems to be a hotel.

With plenty of taxis, rikshaws and bicycle rikshaws waiting to rip us off!

You kind of forget how crazy hectic India is until you are back. A definite marmite country, you're either going to love it or hate it. I'm swaying between the two at the moment! There are such an intensity of colours, smells and emotions round every corner.

We've visited the Red Fort, the sandstone palace of the last Mughal emporers of India. Here is the Indian flag over the main entrance, Lahore Gate.

Spot the chipmonk in this photo!!

We visited the impressive Jama Masjid mosque. Everything is negotiable in India, we bargained on the admission price!

We have eaten delicious thali, fantastic jalebi and more veggie curry than you can shake a stick at. Frustratingly we have both already had a bout of Delhi Belly as well. We have been and watched a Hindi Bollywood movie, Yaariyan, and have wandered through the medieval bazaars of Old Delhi, where whole streets are dedicated to selling just one thing. For example there are whole markets selling just stationery or whole streets selling only books!

We are on our way to Rishikesh to try out some yoga in an Ashram. It better warm up soon!

Christmas time, mistletoe and wine...

We spent a happy couple of weeks chilling back in the UK over Christmas, involving lots of carols, mince pies and mulled wine.

Charlotte treated us all to a wonderful stay literally in Taunton Castle to celebrate Darsh's birthday. It was great fun, if a little creepy at times! The building is an amazing Grade 1 listed building and we were only the second lot of people to stay there as guests since it had been renovated for the public!

It took a week, but we have sorted our visa to India and we are heading to Delhi tomorrow. We've got some volunteering lined up in Nepal starting in February. First off we're going to have some fun in North India........
