I’ll be dammed!

For New Year’s Eve we stayed in Taupo. Taupo is one massive lake which was created from a volcano that filled with water. There was a freedom camping car park right next to a dam on the Waikato river which feeds into the lake at Aratiatia. They open up this dam a few times each day to put on a show for the tourists. 65,000 litres per second of water gets added to the river creating 15 minutes of intense water thundering through the gorge. It looked stunning.

After this impressive start to New Year’s Day, we carried on to Huka falls which has 220,000 litres per second constantly thundering down an 11 metre waterfall. That’s two Olympic swimming pools each second! The volume of water is immense, all foamy and clear blue.

To top off the first day of the year, me and Olive had a relax in a natural thermal hot springs. It was Olive’s idea to go in and she chose me to join her in case she needed saving in the water!

As we left Taupo the next day, we took in the local museum which had some quirky displays like a retro caravan and a diorama of a timber mill train line. I love a good diorama!

And we squeezed in a quick dip in a little enclave next to Taupo lake with a steaming hot thermal spring feeding into it. We had to pick our spot carefully as some bits were boiling hot, waiting for the lake water to lap in and cool it down. Great fun.

Loved Taupo.
