Wow - how nice is Vietnam! Selina came here over 20 years ago and we have been meaning to come here. We came across to Hoi An, near Da Nang, and stayed in Spring and Toc’s Mercy homestay for our first five days. What a super treat. Their home was lovely, near the river and they made our stay super special.
I rode a bicycle while the kids went with Selina on a moped to go to a full moon celebration at the local temple. I haven’t ridden a bike for decades but got the hang of it again quickly, even with me wobbling along on the opposite side of the road with trucks over taking me. Comical!
Later that day we went into the touristy Old Town where the roads were closed to traffic and lots more lanterns put up to celebrate.
We enjoyed a local game where you have to match your word panel with the words read out to collect flags. We got one :)
The next day we got back on our bikes to go ride a …. water buffalo!! What an adventure! We then ploughed the field and planted some grass. It was very satisfying walking through the mud - Surely a good life lesson for all of us!
To top of our time with Spring and Toc, we took a boat trip to go crabbing, Selina lifted up Chinese fishing nets with her feet and we tried normal fishing with rods by moonlight while chomping on the fish and shrimp caught earlier cooked over a BBQ, sipping rice wine and local beer. It was extra special as it was Selina’s birthday as well. Best birthday ever we agreed. Such fun. These guys made it such a memorable stay. Wow!
