Getting hot in Penang

We spent the rest of our time in Penang trying to not get too hot. The locals kept telling us how hot it is and that we are in a heat wave! We ducked in and out of any air con places and went out for evening meals.

We enjoyed sampling lots of different local snacks in food markets like char keoy teaw, chicken satay, char siew buns, rojak fruity salad, lam mee noodles, dim sum and, of course, loads of roti canai. There were food markets all over the place including next door to our apartment, Gurney Drive and Campbell Street.

Selina got lots of ideas of what to eat from a food tour with Tiger.

Of course our ultimate food place was nearby Banana Leaf (Ataris Villas) restaurant. We went here literally every couple of days for breakfast puris/roti canais and dinner. A gem of a place. The staff were so friendly and food so tasty.

I also really like a lot of the western places, especially coffee and cake places, great to escape into the air con havens in the heat. Wheelers on Love Lane, Lebanon at Batu Ferrenghi, Crumbz, China House, Ang Angs, Full of Beans and Japanese Chaiteraise to name but a few.

Olive did a few different activities including a tie dye course, baking, go karting and more gymnastics at Little Gym in Gurney Paragon. She was really good at the gymnastics and has been showing us her skills.

There was a great indoor park next door to Lotus that Boo and Olive spent a happy day in.

We did do a few more touristy things but not loads. We saw two Buddhist temples Wat Chayamangkalaram and Dhammikarama.

We enjoyed the views (and the Dusty Leaf not Macaq monkeys!) from Penang Hill and the furnicular ride up. We even returned another day for the tasty afternoon tea in David Browns.

The Upside down museum was a bit of daft fun. It was a bit of a sausage factory as we got moved through the rooms, with staff taking photos of us in each room positioning us for maximum comedy effect!

We went to see Khoo kongsi again which we saw five years ago.

It was also a treat to have Darsh’s brother and his wife join us for a few days. We hired a car and drove round the island, seeing all sorts including a little temple with a big foot print, beaches and taking in some street snacks.

I just hope next time we come back it is a bit cooler!
