When we booked Peruhop they told us there had been some fuel protests blocking some roads but things had cleared up. Unfortunately they picked up again when we were in Paracas so we had to stay a bit longer, hoping the roads would clear. Since they weren’t open, we took a jeep across the desert overnight to get to Huacachina. It was slightly crazy, we set off with another dune buggy at 8pm on a journey that we had been told was two hours but turned into 7 hours with a broken down buggy, 16 bodies crammed into our jeep, getting repeatedly lost, one of our British travellers taking over navigation(!) and lots of shattered folk checking in at 3am!
It was worth it, Huacachina was my favourite bit of our journey to Arequipa. Massive dunes, most striking for me was the view from our bedroom on the first morning.
We took to a dune buggy to give us a bumpy ride round the dunes, basically like a rollercoaster and then a spot of sand boarding. Selina won the prize for most daring as she took on a much bigger dune at the end.
